107 years ago in May when the one and only Dr Walford Bodie toured The Stage reported: 'all records broken at Empire, Burnley, despite great depression, 14,000 men out of the town, phenomenal hot weather, big counter attractions and super tax'.
The article goes on to report: 'Cheered to the echo nightly. Re-called again and again. Mr Horner says: "Doctor, you are greater than ever. Come back when you like." - NUFF SAID: Many thanks to Mr Horner for most comfortable and happy week.... Never in the annals of an amusement has such excitement been witnessed in any Music Hall, the vast audiences simply shrieking themselves hoarse with laughter.'
Dr Walford Bodie was amongst the most famous Music Hall stars of his time and known as the Electrical Wizard of the North. His performances included hypnotism and electrical tricks when electricity was still a wonder of its time.
